Teepee Quality

Toronto stoner-rock group Quest For Fire features former members of Cursed, No No Zero, the Deadly Snakes, and Nordic Nomadic. The youthful combo skirts obvious Black Sabbath comparisons for an original sound on this six-song EP. It’s steeped in the richness of the early Seattle grunge scene and packs a wallop that falls somewhere between the Fluid and Screaming Trees. The Fire seem far too progressive and hyperactive to crawl inside their bong for a thousand-year sleep of sludgy refried Tony Iommi guitar licks; instead, they rely on lush vocal harmonies and Pink Floyd-ish psychedelic extended jams that showcase their musical prowess. And while it is easy for groups like this to incorporate Jethro Tull-like pomp and pap into the mix, Quest For Fire lean toward more economic instrumentation and a strong less-is-more philosophy throughout their self-titled release. It is hard to dismiss a band this talented with such solid influences flying in the face of traditional stoner-rock excess, and this self-titled EP is equally hard to ignore for much the same reason.
