I guess we don’t really have to explain a lot about the bands involved.
First up is Bongripper. We have 5 colours of the Terminal repress and 2 extra colours net to the black one for the repress of Great Barrier Reefer. And we’ve also unearthed some selected items of Bongripper merch from last years sale. Add the Bomgripper pants or totenbag for that full Bongripper experience ;-).
Next up is the new release on Roadburn Records from a band aptly titled as Hell. And also the new Mizmor album Cairn that will come out in September 2019. What’s the link between the two bands you ask? Well ALN - who is Mizmor - is the drummer in the Hell live band. Both can be seen this fall at Soulcrusher in Nijmegen.
The 7” vinyl single features In Decay ft. Antipole & Delphine Coma backed with Bodies ft. Buzz Kull. Both tracks explore the theme of death from very different perspectives.

In Decay explores the theme of loss and the inherent futility of the notion of forever. It’s an introspective story of personal grief and the impact of losing someone close to you set against a rich, dark guitar driven backdrop.
Bodies in contrast tells a macabre story which takes inspiration from a suspected murder case and a related Podcast by the Australian entitled “The Teacher’s Pet”. This track explores the darker side of human nature. The backstory revolves around a disturbing cold case from 37 years ago in Australia, where the sinister disappearance of a young mother is shrouded in a veil of sordid mystery and guilt. https://www.theaustralian.com.au/the-teachers-pet
"Growing up in the 80’s, the sounds of The Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division and The Cure were never far away. As these dark waves are blue printed in my listening experience, I knew instantly when I heard “In Decay” by Kill Shelter that I had to be involved. Luckily Kill Shelter agreed and this perfect double A-side is the result. I am very proud to be releasing this limited edition 7" vinyl on my label this year.”

]]>I wanted to focus initially on music from The Netherlands as that is my homecountry and there is more than enough quality music from here that needs releasing. Machinefabriek - like Gnaw Their Tongues that I signed around the same time - was already making a name for himself with carefully crafted ambient/drone pieces. I knew Rutger (the one musician behind Machinefabriek) from my work at Dutch music website 3VOOR12 and we decided to release Marijn, the predecessor of Ranonkel on vinyl. As he was very prolific we also talked about doing Ranonkel on vinyl but as vinyl was (and is) expensive we decided only to do a cd-version.
In 2019 parts from Ranonkel are used for the soundtrack of African Mirror, a film by Mischa Hedinger and we got talking again. The result is this vinyl press of Ranonkel, the 3rd Burning World Records ever.
Some more info on the vinyl repress:
The press at the time about Ranonkel:
Vital weekly: Using guitar, effects, vinyl and laptop, Rutger Zuydervelt creates highly atmospheric pieces of music, like he always does. His previous effort, the soundtracks to films for the Rotterdam Film Festival wasn't so much of my liking but on 'Ranonkel' he more than makes up. These are strong pieces again, varied in approach, although all centered around the notion of dark atmospheric music, each of them has their own approach.
aQuarius: The sound of Machinefabriek seems to be moving in a much more melodic direction, not that there wasn't always plenty of melody, but these latest forays into soundmaking sound less purposefully experimental, less abstract, and more songlike, more melodic, the opener is downright lovely, and sounds like it could be Godspeed or some Godspeed spawned outfit, a luxurious slow burn, and deep warm chords and glistening sprinkles of high end over the top, haunting and ominous and cinematic, might just be the best track we've heard from Machinefabriek. But heck, the rest of the disc is some pretty great shakes too.

Epic, crushing, and heavy beyond words, YOB has achieved legendary status in recent years due to their unmatched aesthetic and incredible body of work. Formed in 1996 in Eugene, Oregon under the leadership of doom metal mastermind Mike Scheidt on guitars and vocals, the group initially released a three song demo tape in 2000 that garnered them international attention. Drawing comparisons to groups like Neurosis, Sleep and Electric Wizard, YOB succeeded in developing modern sounding doom metal that hearkened back to the classics.
In 2002, YOB released their debut album Elaborations of Carbon followed by Catharsis in 2003, a three song record that clocked in at a colossal 50 minutes. The buzz about YOB was beginning to grow and the trio began to tour more extensively. Remaining quite prolific during this period, YOB continued to release an album each year with The Illusion of Motion coming in 2004 followed by The Unreal Never Lived in 2005. Despite all the momentum, YOB disbanded in 2006.
In 2008 the band returned from hiatus and has remained strong ever since with Travis Foster on drums and Aaron Rieseberg on bass. Reinvigorated and reinspired, YOB released The Great Cessation in 2009. It was doom with a psychedelic twist, a sound that Pitchfork referred to as “cosmic doom.”
At this point in their career, the band found increased exposure in the media, with The New York Times going so far as to call them “one of the best bands in North America” after a performance at Scion Rock Festival.

Bast’s sound is a very interesting one indeed, drawing an equal amount of influence from avant-sludge outfits like Neurosis and Eagle Twin as they do progressive black metal like Altar Of Plagues, Winterfylleth etc. The trio don’t fit comfortably in either the black metal or doom niches however, with their bleak yet psychedelic vibrations existing in a world of its own. Bast have already shared stages with the likes of Nachtmystium, Ufomammut and A Storm Of Light.
Reviews:
Sludgelord: „Spectres is a brilliant début album that shows Bast are on the verge of greatness. Catch them while you can as these guys are going to be huge in the years to come.“
Metal-Observer: Heavy in practically every manner the word can be employed. Emotionally bogged down, monolithic in stature, smothered in percussion and great, empyreal riffs, Bast’s Spectres is a wobbling pyre that tips the clouds. And when it falls, oh! the immensity of what you’ll hear, it is sure to take you and everyone you know down with it.

Scott Hill from Fu Manchu comments:
"Playing Roadburn back in 2003 was a blast! It was a year before we put out our "Start The Machine” release and we played a couple of songs from it live for the first time on that tour. One of the songs that’s on this live record, “I Wanna Be,” is a different arrangement than what ended up on the final studio release. We're stoked that the show was recorded and that people will get to hear it. Always a good time playing at Roadburn!"
The album will be a one time pressing of 500 on blue vinyl. Later this year, the band will release the set worldwide on their own At The Dojo label.

While we try not to gloat (too much), we at Roadburn pride ourselves on acting as musical necromancers and hermit whisperers. Bringing acts back from the dead or coaxing elusive artists out of hiding and into the live arena is always a joy for us.
In the case of Oregonian doom artist Mizmor, we feel particularly fortunate. Mizmor’s 2016 release Yodh was a high water mark for American doom in the past few years and the album release show at Migration Fest was the first and only Mizmor show to date. That changes at Roadburn 2018. We are humbled and delighted to announce that Mizmor will be rising from its slumber to perform Yodh live in its entirety for the first time as the sole European date in 2018.
Those who have yet to hear this sprawling, monolithic album should take heed: this is far from your traditional metal act of any sort. With a tendency to rush from breakneck blasting to a hideous lurch, Mizmor leaves few subgenres of extreme metal unexplored in the scope of its all-consuming black/doom/death hybrid, and we know it’s going to level the room when delivered in a live setting.
When asked about the performance, Mizmor’s sole member (on recording, at least) A.L.N. shared, “We are beyond honored to be invited to Roadburn. To us, it’s the most important festival in heavy music. It’s been a dream of Mizmor’s to perform here; like a pipe-dream though… something lofty and hopeful, seemingly unattainable and out of reach. We are eternally grateful for this opportunity.”
We’re not sure if A.L.N. is the one who should be grateful, as the feeling is quite mutual. Expect to find us in the corner of the room with hands over our hearts as the sound swells around us during Mizmor’s set.

In the words of José Carlos Santos for Roadburn.com.
In 2016, we introduced our faithful Roadburners to the obscure might of the Icelandic black metal underground. By having Misþyrming as our artist in residence, we were able to feature a series of other bands connected to them on our bill, and all of them made abundantly clear with their devastating performances why we are so impressed with this particular scene.
Naðra, which features four Misþyrming members plus the unhinged demon that is vocalist Ö, gave us one of the most enduring experiences of them all when they damn nearly brought down the Extase venue.
Sometimes, however, once is not enough. When, a couple of months after Roadburn 2016, we witnessed Naðra laying waste to a petrified audience during the amazing Eistnaflug festival in Neskaupstaður, Iceland, that tiny voice in our head that kept nagging us turned into a roar: Naðra need more attention from us, from you, from everyone. This black magic is too powerful to be confined to small spaces. After that staggering show in Iceland, the decision was pretty much already made in our minds – Naðra needed to return to Roadburn.
Therefore, in 2017, we are breaking them free, free from the confines of a smaller venue, or of an artist in residence programme. Like opening a Pandora’s box, all those tortured, twisting hymns of sickness that made Allir Vegir Til Glötunar one of the most harrowing records of 2016 will now resonate inside the Het Patronaat as if they were hissing, soul-consuming demons flying free and zoning in on you, beloved Roadburners. This time there will be many more than 300 souls to consume… but their appetite is voracious and never satisfied.
Naðra opened their pit of darkness for you to fall into at the Het Patronaat, on Friday, April 21 2018.

The time has come. All though I don't know if time is that important if you are under the spell of the almighty BONG - Band UK. Anyhow: the box set of the sets Bong played at Roadburn Festival 2010, 2012 and 2014 are now combined in a proper box set on cd and vinyl. Check the link below. Pre-order is on!
On the triple-set release we get a neat showcase of the three, four and five person line-ups of Bong, the core trio of Dave Terry and two Mikes, Smith and Vest, with Benjamin Freeth joining on Shahi Baaja in 2012 (those unmistakable twinkling zoings on ‘Dreams of Mana Yood Sushai’), and then Pete Ryde a further addition on guitar for 2014. Mike Vest’s guitar is all intense dread psych, from endless dirt krssshhhh, to a hurricane wheeling and whirling churn. ‘Trees Grass and Stone’ is stunning, starting with fully ten minutes of just pure wild electricity, like you’ve plugged your mind into the thick fuzz cable. There’s unhinged insect skittering at the end of ‘Dreams of Mana Yood Sushai’, and great crackling thunder shards of guitar are thrown down at the end of ‘Onward to Perdondaris’. Across the band’s releases, Vest seems to be assisting Dave Terry’s bass in a shadowy heist where they’ve constructed some sort of occult sonic drill which just grinds and grinds away, threatening to break into the abyssal vaults of the universe’s sonic consciousness. Gena was chosen by Arctic Drones website as one of the top 5 doomgaze bands around. This among Jesu, The Angelic Process and Have A Nice Life. What is doomgaze you ask? Artic drones tries to explain: “Doomgaze is a crossover subgenre fusing deliberately paced, heavy and repetitive doom drones and mellower shoegaze layers. The style is typically defined by a heavy emphasis on atmosphere and an extensive use of reverb, distortion and feedback.”
As a review on Slow day they state: “No one can question the power that Gena capture on their recordings, and the first song on their 2018 album Slow Day attests to that. “Past” is perhaps one of the best intro songs in the doomgaze genre, and it’s undeniable grandiosity will lock you in for the rest of the album. True to the name, the songs keep to slow tempos while doom-filled guitars crash against the droning undertones. While some lean toward instrumental bands in this realm of music, the vocals Gena present fit the aesthetic perfectly.
Each song is a new concept, giving forth new ideas and various genre blends like post-metal and shoegaze while keeping the overall vibe of doom and gloom. This album should be a go-to for people looking to experience more in this realm of music, especially as it represents the genre well whilst simultaneously distinguishing its own distinct “Gena” sound. ”

Chelsea Wolfe (born November 14, 1983) is an American singer-songwriter and musician. Raised in Northern California with a country musician father, she began writing and recording songs during her childhood. Wolfe has earned underground critical acclaim for her releases, The Grime and the Glow (2010) and Apokalypsis (2011), which blended elements of gothic rock and folk music, as well as her following albums, Pain Is Beauty (2013), Abyss (2015) and Hiss Spun (2017), in which Wolfe incorporated elements of neofolk, electronic and heavy metal. Her music has been featured in promotional material for the 2017 Jaguar XE car as well as the television series Game of Thrones, Fear the Walking Dead and How to Get Away with Murder.
The Quietus wrote of this Chelsea Wolfe release at the time: „“I was about to call it a day when, on the way out of the venue, my attention was caught by a siren’s wail, and I was drawn inexorably to the Green Room, the 013’s middle venue. Chelsea Wolfe’s mix of shoegaze swirls and satanic swamp-rock stomp was totally, irresistibly enthralling (and I missed the last train home as a result.) It’s these kind of discoveries that Roadburn is built upon. Just by chance, you’ll stumble across a performance from a band who’ll be your new favourite thing for the next 12 months, then you come back here, and you start the process all over again.“

Seven years (or probably more) years in the making. I got talking to these guys after seeing them destroy Supersonic Festival two years in a row with their Brainbombsesk annihilation tactics. Little that I know it would lead to a 7 year production period. But never mind that now. Here's Drunk In Hell..
On the Supersonic gig (by Adam Stone)
"The magnificently oblique and studio-shy Drunk In Hell ignited a pissed-up crowd and caused the steroid-quaffing security lesbians to suddenly wake up and wade into the mosh pit with a ridiculously misplaced intention to curb the euphoria of a throng who knew that these Tees-side misfits were the dog’s bollocks and a bit more besides. DIH are the new band who cannot play by the rules and who don’t follow any orthodox progression routes – and they’re not even that new. Ha! One four track demo that is over four years old plus two murky live sets on bandcamp and these insane buggers manage to almost headline Saturday night at the UK’s premier leftfield music festival."
More on the music of Drunk In Hell (from Collective zine):
Sonically and socially, this record is an offence and an affront. It is an attack. A mauling. A kick in the egg sac just when you'd recovered from a previous rupture and thought you were safe. Drunk In Hell have been around for yonks but seem to have only just started actually releasing music so people can hear it in the relative comfort of their own homes rather than looking at them on a stage and being a bit afraid. Their record is some 35 minutes long and feels like a power drill is being plunged through the top of your skull, right at that poit where your fontanelle used to be. Feedback whines. A beast roars. Riffs, if one can call them such, grate endlessly and atonally against each other until you're screeching at your turntable, begging for everything to JUST STOP.

Praise for Weighing Souls With Sand:
Macon, Georgia’s The Angelic Process have often been called “drone doom,” but you’re not going to find much in common between them and the likes of Khanate or Sunn0))). No, their intense and massive sound is somewhere between shoegaze and crushing industrial, almost as if Justin Broadrick kept the dark heaviness of Godflesh and somehow applied it to the grace of Jesu — but with the kind of mournful melodies that can only come from doom metal. Weighing Souls With Sand, the group’s second and final album, is absolutely devastating in its blend of power and beauty. There’s something altogether fearsome about the crushing sonics of a track like “The Promise of Snakes,” and yet, it’s the beauty of it all that really gets to you. Sadly, guitarist Kris Angylus took his own life shortly after this was released, bringing the band to a tragic end, albeit one with an absolute wonder of a swan song. (Treblezine)
""Weighing Souls With Sand" is a hauntingly beautiful masterpiece that gives its listeners one final look into the tortured mind of Kris Angylus before he left our world." (Sputnik Music)
"Bands like Jesu and Cult of Luna might be attracting the most attention with their distortion-drenched melodies, dubbed "metalgaze" by the perpetually pigeonholing music media, but it might surprise some that the Angelic Process have been doing it for longer than many of their peers." (Popmatters)
"Utterly poignant and powerful, “Weighing Souls with Sand” is an epic, exhaustive album. The magnitude of power that the music exhibits is absolutely stunning. Combining heaviness and, at times, brutality with utter splendor, this album spans genres and mindsets impressively and distinctly. I would recommend this to fans of stirring music laden with beauty throughout, and may K. Angylus rest in peace." (Metal Underground)

Each year at Roadburn an iconic set from a past festival edition is immortalised in wax as a limited run on Roadburn Records.
This year, it’s the turn of Bell Witch – and their legendary set from the 2015 edition of Roadburn. The heavy hitting doom duo performed in an earlier incarnation – featuring original drummer Adrian Guerra. The set at Het Patronaat was captured and mixed by Marcel van de Vondervoort before being mastered by James Plotkin. In 2016, Guerra left the band, and shortly afterwards, he passed away.
Bell Witch‘s Dylan Desmond comments:
“For years Adrian and I had admired the Roadburn Festival from afar. When we received the invitation we were both ecstatic! I remember entering Het Patronaat early that morning and feeling overwhelmed. We were both exhausted from the flights and felt like very small fish in a very big pond. There were very few performances we had anticipated as much as this one.
I think all the emotions can be heard in the recording of the performance. To my knowledge, this was the last recorded release of Adrian Guerra with Bell Witch. In my mind, I can see the smile that would stretch beyond his face if he were to hear about this being released.”
The release will be limited to 500 copies on black and white vinyl (no CD or digital release is planned), and will be sold exclusively at Roadburn Festival 2018. The artwork was handpicked by the band and created by Leo Ulfelder. The photograph on the back sleeve is by Niels Vinck.
The set has been online for a while on Bandcamp (click=go) and is now available for pre-order. The records will ship out by the end of April 2018.
As we had some of the GNOD Live At Roadburn 2012 left we also decided to throw those in to make a package for "nice price".

Wolves in the Throne Room re-imagined black metal as an ode to rain storms, wood smoke and the wild energies of the PacificNorthwest. They are considered as one of the most potent and highly regarded bands in heavy metal today. Now, a portal into their mythic ethereal heathen landscape opens once again.
Wolves’ performances are all about channeling emotions and luring the audience into a meditative state; Aaron Weaver has gone so far as to say he wants people to “lay on the floor and cry” during the shows. The songs each contain several parts, from the soaring climax of “Vastness and Sorrow” to the trance-like introduction of “Cleansing”, making the album feel like an epic journey through desolate worlds and beautiful landscapes. Indeed, the band cites post-metal giants Neurosis as an inspiration for how their music “operates on a deep and intense mythical level”. Wolves’ music is a very personal experience; there is no fist-pumping, there are no mosh pits, only your mind and the places – majestic, bleak, burned and reborn, that the music takes it. Seeing the band live is an experience that can’t be recreated anywhere else, but Live at Roadburn is a suitably fierce and meditative addition to Wolves’ excellent catalogue. (Sputnik Music)
The performance was recorded live at the Roadburn Festival, April 19, 2008 at 013, Tilburg, Netherlands. Mixed and mastered at Torture Garden Studio, Oss, Netherlands.
