Bong Stoner Rock 2LP vinyl Ritual vinyl
To be so audacious as to name it 'Stoner Rock' you know that Bong mean business with this new album, and indeed this latest from the prolific stoner-doom ritualists is indeed a dense and powerful concoction, with its two tracks spanning a mammoth 70 minutes of slow, pummelling dirge-riffing and sludgy dronebuzz atmospherics. Opener 'Polaris' essentially just pounds away at the same note every five seconds or so for half an hour in a deep monotone swell. Doom and a half.
Things pick up pace a little in 'Out of the Aeons' though, with a ponderous drumbeat and some distant Eastern-sounding twinkles joining the pounding drone, which continues on the same note as the opener: that note is a B, in case you were wondering. Late on in the album there's some spoken word, too, some kind of Hawkwind-esque sci-fi babblings delivered in a dramatic voice like some kind of ritual incantation, which is really the only way to vocalise over music like this I suppose. Heavy shit.
